Accountability Monday: 12/26/2017

Good morning! And Merry (belated) Christmas to all who celebrate!

We just wrapped up the holidays with one family and are currently en route to our second of three Christmas celebrations- we put a lot of miles on our cars (and our feet!) this time of year.

With eight days left until the start of Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, my training for the unofficial Goofy Challenge and unofficial Castaway Cay is officially over! 😁

I finished my last long run, 20 miles, on Christmas Eve, so now I'm a legitimate resident of Taper Town. And it feels so damn good!

Training
Tuesday: 3.1 miles, 10:56 pace
Thursday: 3.1 miles on the treadmill, 12:06 pace
Saturday: 4 miles walked, 15:00 pace. 3.53 miles ran, 11:20 pace
Sunday: 20 miles, 13:41 pace

33.73 total miles

This week felt good. Strong. Fast. Look at those overall paces! This week felt super speedy for me, especially with the total mileage being as high as it was. The only downside to this week's training is the lack of strength workouts. Going into this short taper period (only 13 days until the start of the WDW Half), I'm going to focus on making sure to get in at least four quality strength workouts between now and the race start(s).

Best Run
I had been equally dreading and looking forward to Sunday's 20 miler. Dreading it because my last few long runs have been mentally tough and physically painful. Looking forward to it because I knew it was the last hurdle for this training cycle before heading into a relaxing two weeks of holidays and time with family.

But once I started running, I stopped dreading it. I relaxed. I settled into the run. The miles ticked by and before I knew it, my watch said 18 miles and I'd be done in less than 25 minutes.

And I felt GREAT! Sincerely, honestly, great. My legs were a bit sore and my feet were a little beat up but I could have definitely run 6.2 more miles and finished the marathon distance.

I don't know what changed or what was different, but it was such a solid long run and I feel 100% more confident going into WDW Marathon Weekend than I did just a few weeks ago.

All smiles after 20 miles.
And yes, I wore the Santa hat during the entire run :-)

Bravo Moment
See above. I ran 20 freaking miles. On Christmas Eve. 😁

Quote of the Week
Accurate. Especially when it comes to running.

And because this is the "Christmas edition" of Accountability Monday Tuesday, here's a holiday card from our family to yours! May you find joy, love, and peace this holiday season and in 2018!

PS- Need a little running motivation this week? Check out this weekend's guest post about using running to overcome life's obstacles.

Have a great week, friends!

Accountability Monday: 12/18/17

Good morning!

It's been a busy week in the McShupp household as we prepare for a few weeks of holiday celebrations and lots and lots of travel!

With our Disney trip just around the corner (less than three weeks until we are in the house of the mouse!), we are finishing up all our last-minute to-do's, including our last long run that we'll complete this Sunday.

Training
Tuesday: Treadmill 5k, 37:51
Thursday: 5k outside in 19ΒΊF weather, 37:57
Sunday: 6.27 miles, 1:18:35

12.47 total miles

Missed all my strength workouts this week and each run was a bit of a struggle. Ugh. Sometimes this happens during training- I'm just going to ride it out and keep my fingers crossed that our last long runs of this training cycle this weekend go smoothly. We are going to try for 10 on Saturday and 18-20 on Sunday.

It was a bit weird seeing all my friends that are also Dopey or Goofy training completing their last long run this past weekend while we scheduled ours for this upcoming weekend. Even though I wrote this training plan based on our schedules, our running ability, and our plans for the races, it still gave me a bit of panic to see other folks out doing their long runs while we weren't.

Hopefully, all goes well this weekend and we can enjoy about two weeks of Taper Town before the WDW Marathon Weekend begins!

Best Run
Even though my headphones died at mile .75 and my watch died at mile 5.37, Sunday's long run was the run that I felt the least crappy. That qualifies as "best," right??

Proof that my feet do leave the ground when I run. 😏

Bravo Moment
This weekend, I made brownies with black beans. Black. Freaking. Beans. In brownies.

I have no picture because they are not pretty. But they tasted kinda ok and were zero Smart Points, so there's that.

Runner Gift Wishlist Items of the Week
First this week, I've got a gift for you that isn't even necessarily for runners, the Yaktrax Walk Traction Cleats. If you know someone who spends a lot of time outside in the winter, walking over snow or ice, this would be the perfect gift for them! You already know I'm a big fan of Yaktrax- get some of these for a great discount (50% off until 12/23!) and find out for yourself how awesome they are.

Please note that by purchasing through the link above, not only will you get a sweet discount but I may also earn a small commission through the Amazon Associates Program: Sparkly Runner is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. [If you aren't comfortable with that, you can always head over to amazon and search for "yaktrax run" instead. 😊]

The second gift this week is one of my all-time favorite products, especially because I tend to end up injured no matter how hard I try not to be- KT Tape! This stuff is amazing and affordable- I just bought a roll yesterday at Wal-Mart for $9.97.

KT Tape has helped me tremendously with my knee and my feet- for me, nothing works better on my tendinitis than this stuff. If you know a runner in your life that struggles with any type of common running injury, gift them a roll of KT Tape- they'll love it- and you!

Minnie Mouse inspired KT Tape keeping my knee together
at the 2016 Princess Half Marathon.

Don't forget! There's still time to get a discount for last week's featured gift- StrideBox!

Use the code SPARKLYRUNNER10 for 10% off 3 or 6 month gift subscriptions.

Use the code SPARKLYRUNNER5 for $5 off your first purchase.

And congratulations to Maureen @PerpetuallyInjuredRunner, who won last week's contest! With an IG handle like that, she's a girl after my own heart. ❤ Happy running, Maureen!

Quote of the Week
With projected 18ΒΊF weather for our long run this weekend, I'll be repeating this all day.

And because we're so close to Christmas (and because I'm a sucker for pug puppies), here's your Monday dose of cuteness!

Santa, I wouldn't mind one of these under the tree this year. ❤😏

Have a great week!

Accountability Monday: 11/14/16

Good morning dear friends. I hope you had a fabulous weekend and are ready for whatever this week throws at you!

If you follow me on instagram, then you know I am back in the boot. I am very grateful for my PT fitting me in last Tuesday so I didn't have to wait all week to figure out what to do with this damn foot.

Lucky for me, I have an absolutely WONDERFUL PT who understands my paranoia and heightened awareness of my body and all its issues. We've decided to treat this aggressively- one week in the boot all day (except when sleeping), then one week only wearing the boot to work- I can take it off in the evenings. I can even try some walking and/or running later this week if my foot feels ok. I have a follow-up appointment on the 22nd to determine the need for an MRI. The x-ray looked fine.

I am trying very hard not to freak out about it. Worst case scenario, it's a stress fracture and I won't be able to run the marathon in seven weeks. Best case scenario, it's just tendinitis or something else wonky that will only set me back a little. Either way, I've dealt with both situations before and while it is out of my control, I can at least control how much it affects me and my well-being.

Obviously, I have not been doing any running since the 20 miler last weekend. I did manage two strength workouts this week and have been focusing on self-care in other ways resulting in two bubble baths, a few glasses of wine, and treating myself to a haircut and color this weekend. Oh yeah, we also decorated the house for Christmas while drinking hot chocolate so that helped put me in a great mood :-)

It is definitely the most wonderful time of the year.

In weight-related news, I lost .6 this week despite having kind of a rough week, Smart Points-wise. I think I ended the week with -35. It happens.

Not much to report this Monday; hopefully I'll be back to running this week and will have a more positive post next week!

Sending you virtual hugs and well-wishes for a great week ahead!

Question of the week: What are your thoughts on the great debate- do you decorate for Christmas/Winter before or after Thanksgiving?

Accountability Monday: 12/21/15

Welcome to the second-to-last Monday of 2015!

If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram then you know that Matthew surprised me with a four night cruise on the Disney Dream last week! Isn't he just the most wonderful man?! I think so :-) Seriously, I think I might have the BEST future husband in the world- he's just so good to me. It was really awesome to be able to take a week off with him during the busyness of the holiday season and just enjoy being with each other and relaxing.

The beautiful Disney Dream, all decked out for Christmas.

So this accountability post takes place while we were cruising on the high seas! I'll probably write a more detailed post about our entire cruise experience sometime in the future. Sidenote, I was in Instagram "jail" all of last week- I could post pictures but I couldn't add captions or comments to my or anyone else's photos. I have no idea how I ended up in jail but it finally ended late Saturday night. If you see any posts without captions, that was why. So weird.

Training:
Tuesday- Castaway Cay 5k, 35 ish minutes, Yoga on the Beach class
Wednesday- Group Cycle Class
Thursday- 30 minute run on Deck 4, no clue as to distance or pace :-)
Sunday- 4.29 mile run with Jen, 10:34 pace

One of the coolest things about cruising with Disney is the free classes offered by the Senses Spa and Gym. Everyday, there were cycling classes, yoga classes, ab workouts, etc. at no additional cost. There were some other classes (boot camp, etc.) that you could participate in for a fee. I liked the free ones just fine :-)

On Sunday, Jen and I kept what felt like a really easy pace- I figured we were running about 11:30- 12 minute miles. We were both shocked to see 10:34 as the overall pace as we both felt like this was an easy effort 4-miler. Hopefully this just means we are getting to be better and faster runners!

I call this "Bahamian Leaning Tree Pose." :-)

Finishers of the Castaway Cay 5k and our frosty friend Olaf.

Food Find of the Week:
I made a similar dish to the one found here (Skinnytaste Cheeseburger Casserole) this weekend and it came out ok. Instead of pasta, the recipe I used called for sliced potatoes. It was definitely different from what I usually make and I'm looking forward to trying it again only using pasta this time. And adding pickles.

Weight:
Who knows??

I did weigh myself on the cruise and I was up about 2 pounds from the previous week. I'm cool with that. There's a lot of eating and drinking on-board a cruise :-)

Non-Scale Victory:
Matthew and I took the stairs EVERY SINGLE DAY on the cruise, regularly walking from Deck 3 to Deck 14 and everywhere in between. We only took the elevator once and that was to move our luggage and to look at the inside of the elevator- there were Disney characters painted on the inside of the elevator shaft that we wanted to see.

Hello from Disney's private island, Castaway Cay!

Have a great week, friends!

AM: 12/29/14

Welcome to the last Accountability Monday of 2014! What a year it's been! Since I started doing these AM posts back in July, I've lost 18.6 pounds and have felt more in control of my eating/running habits than I ever have. So thank you, readers, for keeping me accountable!

I sincerely hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and got to spend lots of time with the people that mean the most to you. My holiday was fantastic and I'm really enjoying the time we've been able to spend with our family and friends.

Training:
Monday- 18.5 mile bike ride, 1.76 mile run, 13:01 pace, 1/1 intervals
Tuesday- Rest day
Wednesday- 2.97 miles, 12:09 pace, 1:30/1 intervals
Thursday- 3.0 miles with Matthew, 11:58 pace, 1:30/1 intervals
Friday-Rest day
Saturday- Rest day
Sunday- 3.33 miles with Dad and Matthew, 12:29 pace, 1/1 intervals

Even with all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, I'm really proud of getting my workouts in. There was a lot of running this week at faster paces and shorter intervals- I finally feel like I'm getting closer to where I was pre-stress fracture. I still haven't pushed on the distance yet but in the upcoming weeks as my training starts for the Shamrock Half Marathon, I'll start adding on the miles.

Nutrition:
Can we just skip this part and forget about all the Christmas cookies I ate? Please? But seriously, this was a tough week nutrition-wise. Being out of my own home (where I can control what's around) is really hard. Luckily, both Matthew's family and my family are super supportive of my healthy eating and filled their fridges with low-fat greek yogurt, skim milk, and plenty of fruit. Overall, I'm happy with the choices I made and I'm confident I can get through one more week of holiday traveling and eating successfully.

My new favorite holiday snack- a hot chocolate (made with the Kuerig) and two tablespoons of marshmallow fluff- only three PPV and absolute heaven in a coffee mug. Amazing.

Weight-loss:
144.4 as of 12/23/14 weigh in
-1.2 from last week
-46 since January 2013
-57.6 since HW

And the roller coaster ride continues! Let's hope it keeps going down. :-)

Enjoy the last three days of 2014 and I'll see you all in the new year!

QOTD: What's your favorite holiday treat?

AM: 12/22/2014

You guys!! Only three sleeps and a wake up until CHRISTMAS!!

Can you tell I'm just a little excited for the holidays? I love this time of year anyway but throw in a little mini vacation from work- I don't go back until January 5th- and I'm a happy, happy girl! Matthew and I will be visiting all of our families so this means lots of traveling- and lots of time away from spaces I can control. But I've packed quite a few snacks, have a plan to be active every day, and have already mapped out the Weight Watchers meetings I'll attend while I'm away from home.

Training:
Monday- Rest day
Tuesday- 30 minutes bike, Runner's World Basic Yoga
Wednesday- Rest day
Thursday- Rest day
Friday- 30 minutes bike
Saturday- 15 minutes elliptical, weight circuit, 15 minutes bike
Sunday- 10 minutes bike, 20 minutes swimming laps

As you can tell, my training was light again this week with absolutely no running or walking. My foot has been cranky and painful all week so I backed off on the walking and running I had been doing. My follow up with the orthopedic doctor will be in a few weeks so hopefully this pain I've been having isn't a big deal and is just part of the healing process. If I've learned anything through this injury it's to listen to my body and back off when something starts to hurt.

Nutrition:
As I've mentioned a couple times on this blog, I am a HUGE fan of Panera's Hidden Menu. This week I decided to try something I normally wouldn't- the Mediterranean Roasted Turkey Bowl. With just spinach, roasted turkey, onion, tomatoes, olive oil and lemon juice, I wasn't expecting this to be that great. I usually get the Power Chicken Bowl but I figured I'd at least try this one out.

Holy hell. This bowl was so good! I was honestly shocked- I didn't know that simple olive oil and lemon would taste so great. I think fast/restaurant food in this country has a tendency to always be covered in dressings or sauces or cheese so for me, it's hard to remember what just simple ingredients taste like. Any way you look at it, this bowl was delicious and I can't wait to try it again and/or make it at home.

Panera is just 100% goodness.

Weight-loss:
145.6 as of 12/17/2014 weigh-in.
+.2 from last week
- 44.8 since January 2013
- 56.4 from HW

Yeah, yeah. My weight went up again this week. When I first saw the numbers on the scale, I was furious. I feel like I have been working so hard to get through this little "roller coaster" period but nothing is helping reverse the trend. I knew that once I got closer to goal (135) this would happen. But knowing that doesn't make it any less frustrating. To lose weight, you've got to always be doing a little bit more than you did the day before- in other words, the strategies that helped me lose the first 45 aren't the only thing that will help me lose the last 10. I've got to move more, be smarter about my food choices, and really stress my body out so it will adapt to these new routines. This means more discipline with tracking and planning my food intake, more and different ways to get activity points, and keeping up all the good habits I've made- sleeping enough each night, drinking water, not eating when bored, etc. I know I can get to goal in 2015- I've just got to power through this plateau and emerge on the other side in control.

To those of you that celebrate, Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah! Have a fabulous week!

Gifts for Runners: Splurges & Steals!

With only five days until Hanukkah and just 13 days until Christmas, time is slowly running out to locate that perfect gift for the special runner in your life! Maybe you want to help them celebrate their accomplishments or perhaps give them something that can help take their training to the next level. Whatever your runner needs, here's a list of splurges and steals- something for every budget.

Foam Roller
Ok, so I personally have not tried the foam roller YET, but I'm hoping that Santa leaves one under the Christmas tree for me this year! From Runner's World, "Using a foam roller can provide similar benefits as deep-tissue massage, helping to prevent injury and improve performance through the increase of flexibility and decrease of muscle tension."

Splurge: I haven't tried this but have heard that it works wonders! Rumble Rollers range in price from $25 for a massage ball or $30- 70 for an actual roller. You can find the closest retailer to you here.

These look slightly scary but are probably great for sore muscles. Source.

Steal: For just $14.77 you can own this Gold's Gym Foam Roller, available at your local Wal-Mart.

Blue is always a good choice. Source.

Medal Rack
Every runner needs a medal rack to show off their bling! There are tons of different types and styles out there, from funny to inspirational and everything in between. Matthew and I have ordered racks from both companies below and were completely impressed with the quality of the items.

Splurge: Ranging from a single medal holder ($22) from one with room for 10 medals ($40- 130), Sport Hooks has beautiful and unique designs to celebrate any athletic accomplishment. If your runner is a run Disney fan, this is the definitely the place to look!

Some models are offered in color. Source.

Steal: Starting at $30, York Sign Shop's medal racks are simple and functional. You can even add on an extra row of hooks to almost any design for just $5. We have two of these types of medal racks- each one holds up to 26 medals! These are affordable customization options as well.

I bought this exact one for Matthew for his birthday. Source.

Tracking Device
If you've got a special runner in your life, then you know it's all about the numbers: pace, distance, heart rate, etc. Using different technologies- like a GPS watch or a running mobile app- runners can easily keep track of their all-important numbers and progress towards training goals.

Splurge: A Garmin Forerunner is one of the leading GPS watches for running. Ranging from $100- 450, they offer a variety of features based on the model type. All offer distance and pace but some offer live tracking, training plans, sharing on social media, and heart rate.

Garmin Forerunner 10. Source.

Steal: Does your runner always run with her phone? If so, purchasing the MVP package of the free app Map My Run might be the perfect gift! The free version tracks distance, pace, and splits. But for $5.99 per month/ $29.99 per year, the upgraded package also can track heart rate, provide coaching and training plans, and allow others to track using the live tracking feature.

I don't know what a power analysis is but I want one! Source.

If all else fails, a gift card to Running Warehouse is always a hit! One of the largest online selections of running apparel and shoes coupled with FREE two day shipping and a 90 day return policy (even on worn shoes!) makes this a fool-proof gift for even the pickiest runner in your life. Matthew and I have both ordered from this company and are big fans of the easy, no hassle return process. I especially like the "Shoe Fitter" which compares different brands and helps you find the correct sized shoe in various brands.

Regardless of budget, I hope you can find that one-of-a-kind gift that will make your runner's heart happy this holiday season. Happy Holidays and happy shopping!

QOTD: What's on your wish list this year?

Monday, December 8, 2014

AM: 12/8/14

Good morning and happy Monday!

Can you believe there are less than 20 days until Christmas?! I hope you are looking forward to the holidays- with almost two weeks off from work, I am so anxious to spend some quality time with all my family and friends. It's amazing how different this year's holiday season is from last year's. This time last year, Matthew and I were gearing up for Dopey and doing our last long training runs. This year I'm planning out routes for him and Dad and earning my "cyclist" status by following them on a bike. Even though it's not what I had originally planned, it's still really fun to be able to do the long run with them. And I get to yell out encouraging things and maybe sings some songs from Rocky IV. They are so glad I'm their cheerleader :-)

Training:
Monday- Runner's World Yoga- Seriously, why haven't I been doing this all along?! It makes me feel amazing!
Tuesday- 20 minutes elliptical
Wednesday- Rest day
Thursday- Rest day
Friday- Rest day
Saturday- 3.95 mile run/walk- yup, I actually RAN with 5:1 intervals!
Sunday- Runner's World Yoga and light upper body weights

The smile says it all- happy to be back!

You may have noticed that my training was a little light this week. Well, after my weigh-in, I knew that I needed to change something up this week because I gained again- for the second time in a row. This is unusual for me. Both weeks I had lots of activity points left over so theoretically, there shouldn't have been a gain. I have a sneaking suspicion that the ActiveLink is overestimating the points that I am earning.

So I did two things- 1. I am doing another assessment with ActiveLink. I hope this reset will give me a more honest version of the points I'm earning. 2. I made a goal this week to not use all the APs that that I am "earning." I wanted to see if this would make a difference on the scale. We shall see on Wednesday.

Nutrition:
Matthew and I ate out a TON this week/weekend and I went to two holiday parties. But overall, I'm very happy with the food choices I made. The Weight Watchers app is a lifesaver- whenever we are at a restaurant, I can always look up different options for meals in the app and then make the best choice based on where we are. I managed to only use eight APs in addition to my 49 weekly PPV.

Lots of eating out and holiday parties this week.
And I had watermelon- in December! It was awesome.

Pretty good PPV management if you ask me.

Weight-loss:
147.4 as of 12/3/14 weigh-in
+1.2 from last week
-43.0 since January 2013
-54.8 since HW

I can't sugar coat it. I am super frustrated with my weight-loss this week. After last week's gain, this was a crushing blow to my goals. I started out December at a higher weight than November. I just don't understand how I can lose seven pounds while I was non-weight bearing and then gain once I start moving again. My hopes of hitting the 50 pounds lost mark in 2014 are fading quickly. I'd basically have to lose over seven pounds in the next three weeks- unlikely.

I know that this is only one week and I know that it's not a ginormous set-back. But it's still crazy frustrating, especially when I have been working out and staying within my points each week. Hopefully by redoing the assessment with ActiveLink and by changing how I view and use the APs, there will be some movement on the scale. Either way, I want to power through this gain and get back to losing.

QOTD: What are you looking forward to most this holiday season?

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas are some of my most favorite weeks of the year.

Why?

1. Peppermint EVERYTHING! Peppermint + Chocolate = Heaven.
2. Snow/colder weather. Fun to look at and run in; with the proper gear, of course :-)
3. Holiday races! Turkey Trots, Jingle 5k's, etc. Lots of local (and affordable) races this time of year.
4. Wish lists and holiday shopping!
5. Lots of time with family and dear friends :-)

Speaking of holiday races, I have been lucky enough to have participated in back-to-back weekends of fun and festive races! Below are my quick & dirty recaps for each with some helpful hints on what to wear in colder weather.

Shippensburg Turkey Trot 5k
This local race seemed to have everything you could ask for in Thanksgiving race- a low entry fee ($10), random drawings for cool prizes, and all proceeds benefitting a local food pantry. In reality, you get what you pay for.

This race started at Shippensburg Memorial Park at 8:30 am. It was really chilly Thanksgiving morning- around 28 degrees with some pretty horrendous wind. I have a habit of dressing up for holiday races and this one was no different. I wore Champion brand base layer pants and long-sleeved shirt (both from Target, around $15 each, amazingly warm!), a cotton tuxedo t-shirt, and a cotton tuxedo sweatshirt. I also wore my gunmetal Sparkle Athletic skirt, a pair of Nike gloves, a Nike ear warmer headband, a Champion brand women's running hat and a Bula brand neck gator.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The race itself was pretty simple, a little loop around the park, another loop through a neighborhood, then a quick out and back to the Volvo plant. There was one "water stop" and I use that term lightly. There were two kids, probably about eight years old, handing out small bottles of water around the one mile mark. No one was taking them because it was really, really cold.

After the turn-around and when I knew how much longer we had until the finish, I looked at my watch and started to feel pretty crappy about my time. In almost all races, my goal is to finish. This one was no different; it was a fun, holiday race. But something was bugging me. I felt like I was putting a ton of effort and pushing the pace. But my time was SO much slower than my typical 5k time. What concerned me the most was that this was day one of a four day Dopey simulation. Knowing that I was going to run 40 miles in four days, I didn't like feeling so crappy while I was going so slow.

Anyway, I finished the race and found my way over to Matthew. Then I looked at my mapmyrun app on my phone- 3.49 miles. I wasn't that slow- the course wasn't marked properly. The little loop we did in the neighborhood wasn't part of the course. But, with no course volunteers or course map ahead of time or directional signs to lead us, we all just followed the leaders. Apparently, this loop was part of the course in years past, just not this year.

I was ticked that I had allowed something as silly as the minutes on the clock make me feel so bad about myself and my run. I was working hard, pushing the pace, and really putting in effort. I don't like being in a negative head space like that. Also, I ended up being really warm. I probably shouldn't have worn the sweatshirt or the gloves.

Will I do this race again? Probably. But I'll be sure to try and figure out the course before-hand :-)

Christmas Dash for Cash 10k
Yesterday, we competed in another local race. This entry fee was significantly higher- almost $40 per person because there were lots of cash prizes for overall winners, age division winners, most festive dressed, teams, etc. I entered the "Athena" category; women over 155 pounds. This was the first time I've seen this division offered in an event OTHER than a triathlon.

This race had an 8:30 am start time. It was 32 degrees at the start. Previous to the start, you could pick up your bib (and shirt, if you bought them for an extra $12) and use a real bathroom at a beautiful church. It was really nice to have a warm area to spend the pre-race time. Around 8:15, they started letting us know that we would have start walking to the starting area.

I felt like we were at a Disney race! It was about a half mile walk to the starting line which was at the top of a giant hill.

Trudging up the hill to the start.
On this walk, I started to second-guess my clothing. I was wearing my Champion brand base layer pants, an Under Armour long-sleeved shirt, a cotton t-shirt, my Nike ear warmer headband, a Santa hat, knee-high Christmas socks, a cheap pair of tech gloves, and a Sparkle Athletic skirt. I was chilly at the start and hoped that I wouldn't be cold the entire race.

There was no start line. We had timing chips attached to our shoes, but we never ran over any timing mats. The race director literally stood on the side of us, counted down, and said go. It was the most odd start to a race I've ever experienced.

The crowd, listening to the race director.

Matthew, looking puzzled :-)

Race director giving us course information.
Without much fanfare, we were off! I started my watch when I passed the race director (about 10 seconds after he said "go!") and began the awesome downhill to start the race.

The course itself was well-marked and there were volunteers at every stop directing runners where to go. There was one water stop, just a bit past mile three. The course had a good amount of hills on it. While going up hills, I was remembering what Galloway says about hills- shorten your stride and pick up your cadence. I actually passed two people using this method! Also, I ended up staying nice and warm on the course. What I wore worked perfectly for this particular day and distance.

Not-so-scenic course.
At mile 5, I looked at my watch. It was at 55 minutes. I cried. Under 12 minute miles! For most people, my race times are not competitive. I'm a slow and steady runner. The only person I'm trying to do better than is myself. I strive to make each race feel better and (hopefully) pace faster.

The same giant hill we walked up to the start was the downhill finish to this course- it was glorious! Running towards the finish, I knew I was going to PR. I actually had butterflies in my stomach as I was nearing the finish line. I crossed and could not believe it. Unofficially, 1:09:23. I took almost five minutes off my 10k time from a few weeks ago. I could not be more proud of myself. Finally, all this training is paying off!

We didn't stick around to see the awards. They were posting times inside the church and I could see the 3rd Athena runner came in around 1:04 and since they were only awarding the top three in every division, I knew I wasn't getting an award. The lines to get food and water after were really long- we ended up getting a drink from the water fountain in the church.

Will I do this race again? Maybe. It was a little pricey for a 10k that didn't include a shirt and had funky logistics (start, food/water, etc). Overall, I enjoyed most of the race, especially the part where I managed a PR :-)

How were your holiday races? I'd love to hear about them!

Happy running!

Race Recap & Review: Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend Part 1 (Expo and 5k)

This past weekend was the 4th annual Wine & Dine Half Marathon in Walt Disney World. I've participated in this weekend before (5k in 2011, 5k and half in 2012) and I have to say, this is my favorite Disney race!

There are two races as a part of this weekend- both on Saturday. Mickey's Jingle Jungle 5k starts at 7 am and takes place in and around Animal Kingdom. The half marathon starts at 10 pm the same day and covers three parks before ending in the Epcot parking lot. After the race, runners are treated to what run Disney calls the "ultimate runners night out!" in Epcot. Selected rides and food kiosks are open for runners until 4:30 am. *Spoiler- it was the ultimate way to end a half marathon!*

This post will review the expo and the 5k. Find part 2 here.

Expo
After the disaster that was the Disneyland Half Marathon Expo, I wasn't sure how Disney would respond to make this a better experience. But they absolutely did.

On Friday we left our hotel at 9:30 am on the run Disney provided shuttle bus. If you stay on Disney property at one of the "host" hotels for the weekend, you have access to shuttled rides to all race weekend activities- it's incredibly convenient.

The expo was held at ESPN Wide World of Sports and was supposed to open at 10 am on Friday. We got there around 9:40 and were able to walk right in to pick up bibs for both the half and the 5k.

Picking up the 5k bib- no line for me!

Line for the half marathon bibs.

In our packets, we received our bibs, a $10 Disney gift card, and a bracelet to wear as our admission "ticket" to the after party. After picking up the bibs, we walked to a different building to get our shirts and explore all the vendors.

As usual, there were plenty of vendors at the expo and tons of run Disney and Wine & Dine specific merchandise. I had no problem getting a few t-shirts, magnets, and other items. There was a lot in stock and the line moved very quickly. After purchasing some official merchandise, we walked to the back of the expo to pick up our race t-shirts. Again, no issues or lines picking up shirts.

For the 5k, we got a dark green cotton t-shirt with the 5k logo. The half shirt was a unisex, black long-sleeved shirt with the Wine & Dine logo on it.

There were plenty of vendors, free food, and other cool stuff at the expo. The crowds were never overwhelming and we were in and out within an hour. This was a very organized, well-stocked expo.

No lines! :-)

Again, no lines!

Easy shirt pick-up.

Busy, but not too crazy.

I LOVE the Wine & Dine shirt!
After the expo, we stopped for a quick lunch at Raglan Road in Downtown Disney and then headed over to Magic Kingdom for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. If you are ever in Disney around the holidays (Christmas starts November 1 in WDW), this is a must-do. Christmas in the Magic Kingdom is simply beautiful. And it definitely got us in the holiday spirit for the Jingle Jungle 5k the next morning!

The nightly fireworks are holiday themed.

The first night the lights came on!
Jingle Jungle 5k
We woke up early on Saturday (4:00 am to be exact) and were on the bus to Animal Kingdom by 5:00 am. The race course starts and finishes in the AK parking lot. Before the race there are usually characters and a DJ playing music to get everyone pumped up. The race started at 7:00 am and we wanted to be there early to get our annual picture with Mickey and Minnie.

2011 Halloween 5k (Wine & Dine was in October that year)

2012 Jingle Jungle 5k
However, it seemed like everyone else had the same idea. The line for Mickey and Minnie was insanely long and we decided to skip the picture. We did find a shorter line for pictures with a run Disney sign and a wintery background. While waiting in line, a Marathon Foto photographer asked to get a picture of us for possible use in marketing. It was later posted on the run Disney facebook page- so even though we didn't get our annual character photo, we got an excellent quality picture :-)

I have to give credit where it's due- Matthew planned these costumes! They turned out awesome!

They also posted this gem of my awesome Cupid Shuffle skills!
After dancing around and chatting with our friends Kathy and Jennifer- both of whom we met through run Disney!- it was time to get into the corrals. Matthew and I were both in A which was absolutely amazing. I have no idea how I ended up in the first corral but it was so cool to be in the first wave.

Whoa- corral A!
While passing time in the corral, I was looking at facebook and saw that some runner friends, Pam and Christine from We Run Disney, had posted their costumes for the 5k and that they were in corral A too. I grabbed Matthew and said, "let's go find them!" The social part is the best part of running for me :-)

As we were walking towards the front of the starting line, someone yelled my name. It was Christine! It was so great to connect with these two and chat about the weekend and recent races/training. I still can't believe I've met them in person- they have an awesome blog and are such cool and inspiring people. It was awesome to see them again this weekend.

They always have the best costumes! Seriously, you should read their blog!

Before we knew it, the national anthem was being sung and we were getting ready to race! Instead of fireworks, there was snow and fog to start each wave. We started out by making a large loop around the parking lot and then continuing into the park.

The King of the Swingers, the Jungle VIP!

Everest is beautiful in the morning.

We ran through parts of Africa, Asia, and Discovery Island before exiting the park, doing a quick out and back behind Everest and then continuing to the parking lot for the finish.

My favorite part of this course- love this bridge.

This was a picture-perfect Florida morning!

Wait... you mean Everest isn't a real mountain?!?!?

Christmas Pluto!

The out and back at mile 2.5.

Adorable medallion!

The course was slightly different this year- usually the out and back section went out to Rafiki's Planet Watch and back. While that route was cool because you could see actual animals, the smell of said animals in the early morning Florida heat wasn't as cool. The course route this year was much better and we spent more time in the park.

After the 5k, we went back to the room and were asleep by 9:30 am. After all, we had only a few hours until our next journey of 13.1 magical miles began!
